Remembering September 11, 2001

Today is September 11, 2012. Eleven years ago today I was sitting in a second grade classroom, completely oblivious to the events that were unfolding in the world around me. Seven years old, no earthly idea that a nation, my nation, our nation, the greatest nation of all, was in a time of tragedy and utter chaos. Now, as I embark on a voyage into the beginning of my life, after graduating high school and beginning my college career, I build my life from the ground up. For the last eighteen years I have been a son of privilege; that changed the day I turned eighteen. Throughout my entire life I have only been designing the foundation of what is to come. As I accepted my high school diploma I had only begun to realize how lucky I am. I am one of many, yet very few, of the luckiest people on this planet. I am free. I have rights. I was born without anyone questioning these rights or telling me I didn’t have them. Most of all, I am an American, and I am proud. America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are the greatest nation there is. We are resilient, no matter what the world throws at us. No act of terrorism can begin to break this nation to pieces. We have proven that over the most recent eleven years. First responders, civilians, the US Military, everyone put their lives in jeopardy performing selfless acts to save others on September 11, 2001. We put others before self, and we do that as a whole. That is what makes us the greatest nation in the world. We will never give up. We will never forget those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, nor will we forget those who lost there lives in their life sacrificing actions days, weeks, months, even years after to help the trapped and hurt. Those selfless acts show true heroism in us, and they will live in history forever. I want to take a moment to thank those who put their lives on the line every day. Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, civilians, anyone that thinks of others’ well being before their own, and most of all, any and every branch of the United States Armed Forces. Thank you for keeping this country free. Thank you for protecting, serving, and defending the greatest country of all: The United States of America. From many we are one, and without you we are nothing.
